As our farm transitions from summer to fall, the days may get shorter on sunlight, but they tend to get longer with the demands of harvest. We will be finishing up our hay baling, rolling from silage cutting to corn picking and then on to combining soybeans. In the middle of all of that, our calving season will also begin. “Go-time” is an understatement this time of year around here. At the end of these long and sometimes trying days, we look forward to nothing more than a nice hot shower and good hot meal thanks to our safe and reliable energy source, propane. In more ways than one, it’s the environmentally friendly fuel that keeps our family going.

Our days may always look a little different depending on what we have to do, but they start and end the same—me saddled-up next to my propane range, cooking breakfast or supper followed by our family enjoying meals together around the kitchen table. From sausage and eggs, to cast iron steaks and skillet smashed potatoes, to a homegrown juicy burger cooked on the grill, I can’t imagine not cooking with propane. It’s dependable, efficient and easy to control the cooking temperature. Another bonus is that the few times a year we inevitably lose power due to a hurricane or snow storm, but with our propane stove we never have to worry about not being able to cook. It takes a lot to keep the farm going and cattle fed and watered during those times, and not having to worry about how to prepare our own meals is a blessing!

Back to those hot showers…with a family of four sharing one bathroom, it’s a must to have access to reliable hot water. Our propane hot water heater keeps up with demand while using less energy, and the icing on the cake is that it, costs less to operate and has fewer emissions than other electric water heaters. We also enjoy using well water and don’t have to worry about contaminated groundwater because propane is non-toxic. We have plenty of things to worry about on the farm, it’s nice to know our energy source—propane—isn’t one of them.
